abstract = "Sugarcane is an economically important crop in Brazil, mainly due
to the growing demand for ethanol that results from both the
mixture of ethanol in gasoline and the popularization of flex fuel
cars after 2003. The expansion of this crop was intense in
South-Central Brazil, especially in S{\~a}o Paulo State, which
presents the largest planted area of sugarcane in the country.
Thus, becomes important to evaluate the dynamics of the expansion
of this crop and its impact over land cover changes. In this
context, this study aimed to evaluate land cover changes resulting
from the expansion of sugarcane crop between 2003 and 2010 in the
administrative region of Barretos, which has one of the highest
concentrations of planted area of sugarcane in S{\~a}o Paulo
State. For this purpose, thematic maps of 2003 and 2010 Landsat
images, generated using object-oriented classification, were
compared. Furthermore, cell space analysis was used to evaluate
the concentration of sugarcane crop in the study area, and
landscape metrics were used to check the condition of the
remaining forest areas. The results show that sugarcane crop
replaced mainly pastures and other crops. Cell space analysis
allowed a more objective visualization of the spatial distribution
of sugarcane crop in the study area, integrating data from
different sources. The landscape metrics indicated that there was
a reduction in forest area and an increasing in the isolation of
forest fragments, which reduces the conditions for maintaining
                         biodiversity in the region.",
